Frockin' up - My picks of the 2012 ARIA Awards

I was a little disappointed in the photos shared from this years ARIA Awards. Whenever there is a US awards night thousands of photos turn up all over Australian news sites. But the ARIAs? A few measly shots. I'm sure that there were many more lovely dresses, but the ones above were my favourites from the ones I could lay my hands on.

From top Left - Ginger & Smart looking smart. How lovely is the print on Charli Robertson's dress? Kimbra always wears something great, flamingos and feathers? GOLD. The sleeves on Ricki-Lee Coulter's dress are fantastic and I love the pink colour.

Maybe next year I'll have to fly to Sydney and take my own photos?

Radio Silence

Sorry for the radio silence. With exercise now taking up more of the time when I used to blog & a few other projects on the go, blogging has been a little lower down the list. But I miss it and I hope you guys are all ok.

The photo above was taken on my early morning run yesterday, during the cool down walk. The cactus is in someone's garden and they have many more. I like the wildness of the yard surrounding the tiny house.

I'll be back tomorrow with my pick of the ARIA Awards Frocks. See you then x

Gingerbread, Baubles and Secret Santa

Monday, November 26, 2012

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone AppUploaded from the Photobucket iPhone AppThe Christmas Parties have well and truly begun! This weekend we had Nick's work Christmas party. Each year his work does a secret santa where you have to make or recycle a present up to the value of $10. Then when they exchange the presents you can decide to pick one from the present pile or take one that someone else has already opened.  There is always one present that is way more popular than the others that circles through everyone - the shortbread cookies that one of the staff makes are always a hot ticket.

Exercise Stats - 12WBT Week 1

Spencer Hill on my run Monday night

Today is the end of week 1 of the 12 Week Body Transformation and I'm glad that today is a rest day. I exercised six days this week and I stuck to the food plan apart from yesterday, which was Nick's Christmas party. I may have gone a little over, but that was what, for me, doing this program was all about, learning more about what I'm eating so my good days count and I can have a day off here and there for Christmasy celebrations, without putting on weight.

My exercise program for the week looked like this:

Monday - After Nick came home from work I went out and did week 2 of C25K, plus a 20 minute power walk. Plus 25 (each side) step ups and an Abs super set

Tuesday - Up early to do 12WBT body toning and Ab workout program

Wednesday - Up early again to do week 3 C25K plus 25 (each side) step ups and an Abs super set.

Thursday - Up early to do week 1 of 30 Day Shred.

Friday - Up early to do yoga using the Pocket Yoga app as recommended by Bionic Briana

Saturday - Went to bed too late on Friday night and could not get going early, so around 8am I headed out with Lulu for a run, doing week 3 of C25K. Then Lulu & I walked into town, did a few chores while we were there and then walked home.

If the hot weather that I have been bitching about on twitter continues next week, then I think I'll mix things up with a little aqua aerobics that my friend attended this week.

Leibster

Briana from Bionic Briana nominated me for a Leibster Award! I'm touched. As a recipient of the reward I have to answer a few questions, so here goes:
  1. When an adult asked you as a kid what you wanted to be when you grow up, what was your answer? A teacher
  2. If you celebrate Christmas, real or fake Christmas tree? There aren't any real Christmas trees in Alice Springs so my answer has to be fake, however the Christmas we spent in Canada where real trees are easy to source, we had a real one.
  3. What is your favorite time of the day and why? I like the morning when everything is fresh.
  4. In your current relationship, who said "I love you" first? He did
  5. When shopping for clothes, do you prefer to get-in-and-get-out or do you like to make a day of it? I like to make a day of it if I can.
  6. Leaving the bodily functions out of it, what is the first thing you usually do in the morning? I'd like to say cuddle my baby but the reality is 'turn the coffee machine on'.
  7. With the upcoming New Year, do you make resolutions? Do you have any in mind for 2013? I am such a planner, I'm always looking ahead, but next year I want to take more time to live in the now & enjoy each moment. And also to do some form of exercise at least 6 days a week
  8. If money wasn't an issue, where is the one place in the world you'd like to travel? I'd really just like to go back to Mexico, I love it there.
  9. Climate Change (formerly known as Global Warming). Do you believe in it? Why or why not? I do believe in it. With all the pollution we put into the air & with all that we, as humans, take from the environment, I can't believe that it isn't doing some form of damage to the earth.
  10. And last, but maybe most important of all, how do YOU take your coffee? Who knows. I might need this information someday when we meet. I have a soy latte. No sugar.

Thankful at Thanksgiving

While we don't celebrate Thanksgiving here in Australia, I still thought it might be a good time to mention what I'm thankful for. As this year I have so much to be thankful for. I am thankful for my wonderful husband, my beautiful baby,  my great family (both mine & Nick's) and I'm thankful for the new friends I've made this year, through my mother's group and through blogging. I am truly blessed.

What are you thankful for this year?

Baby Sleep Routine

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone App

I was recently directed to this post on Babble, written by Expatria Baby, about baby sleep schedules (or lack of) in Japan. Babies there don't nap or nap for minimal amounts of time where ever they happen to get tired (in the car, the pram etc) and then the babies go to bed late, like after 9pm! Sleep books be damned!

I have been meaning to write about our experience with the book Save our Sleep by Tizzie Hall - though what follows is more of what we've worked out as a 'routine'. Opposite of Japanese babies, I have found that the daytime schedule in the book is helpful, though Lulu is more of a 6:30am - 6:30pm baby than a 7 to 7. She also goes down for her morning nap by 8:50am, as she just can't stay awake longer and she naps in her pram. But the bottle on waking up, solid food an hour later, then nap an hour after that is working. Though she likes more bottle before going for her nap so we have a little bottle than story routine pre-nap.

On waking from her nap she has another bottle. Lunch around 12. Afternoon nap just after 1. She'll sleep until 2:30 or 3 if I'm lucky.

As for getting her to nap? Well she usually screams as you buckle her into the parm & you think 'oh boy, I'll be getting you out of here in 5 mins time' but you give her a minute or two - I do the Tizzie suggestion of setting a small task & if she's not asleep, or at least quietly chattering, by then, then I get her back up again, but usually she's asleep.

Nighttime we follow the dinner at 5:30, bath after dinner, then bottle then story then into the cot by 6:30/7. She will go into the cot awake and roll around for a bit before going to sleep -again following the scream then chatter shutdown - but some nights she falls asleep on the bottle, others the screaming doesn't stop so you go back in and try more food or a cuddle. Usually it's more food she needs.

Waking during the night? Well, she wakes around 10:30 - 11 and we give her another bottle. Until recently she has woken up during the night and we feed her again. The bottle gets her back to sleep. I was worried that this would continue, but this week she has been sleeping through from 11ish so I've stopped worrying about giving her the bottle to get back to sleep. If the bottle isn't what she wants she wont take it & when she does take it she drinks at least 150mls, so she must be hungry, right?!

Save our sleep was useful for routine suggestions and simply for a guide on how to do things. As with everything, you have to pick out what works for your baby. Does your baby have a sleep routine? Do you strictly follow the routine or are you relaxed about it? I don't follow Lulu's routine strictly, nor do I get the daycare to follow it or her Grandma to follow it on the day she takes care of Lulu. I figure that it is just as important for Lulu to fit into other schedules and routines as it is for her to have her own structure at home.

Bored to Death - the end

Can we talk about my new found habit of watching the end of a series not knowing the show has been cancelled? This happened with The Closer & it just happened again with Bored to Death

I love Bored to Death. Ray cracks me up, I mean, Super Ray. Jonathan drinks white wine and gets into all sorts of trouble & I love how George will come to Jonathan's help no matter what. This season's ending had me thinking wistfully about what adventures they'd all get up to next time, only there won't be a next time...

Can you guys give me a heads up on any other TV shows that you loved that were cancelled at the end of last season? I am aware that this season is the last of 30 Rock, but is there any other show ending this season? I don't think I can handle another show ending without being able to savour the last episode.

Nick's mum and her partner came over for dinner Sunday night and we all may or may not have had too much wine - how was your weekend?

Exercise Stats

The Todd River on a morning run

Like last week, this week I managed only two days exercise, running on Thursday morning with Lulu in the pram & then doing the shred early on Friday morning.

Yesterday I did my fitness test, getting ready for the 12 Week Body Transformation (12WBT). I was happy with my running result, 7min 13 sec for 1km, and my push up stats, 25 in 1 min, but my ab and stretch results need work. The fitness test is run every 4 weeks during the program.

I can't tell you how excited I am to start this program. With menu plans that look a lot like food I want to eat, shopping lists and exercise plans, it is the program for me. A few of my friends are starting the program too, so we can keep each other motivated & spur each other on. Want to join us? You have until midnight tonight to sign up here.

Frockin' up - Stripy Dress

Friday, November 16, 2012

Inspired by Lauren from Crumbums, I dug out my black and white stripy dress to wear to work last week. I then wore it again to mother's group the next day, but don't tell anyone I wore it twice..... Do you do this type of thing too? Wear clothes two days in a row?

Getting two days wear out of clothes does not happen in summer in Alice Springs but winter, oh my, two, sometimes three days. Last week it was cooler & the air conditioning at my work is amazing, so two days wear happened. Now I can't remember if this photo was from the work day or the mother's group day. Oh well.

Lulu's teething necklace is lying on the floor right between my legs & the bathroom was in dire need of a clean that day. Note to self - clean up before taking frockin' up photos.

The solution to stop bugs eating my mint and basil is working!! They are coming along nicely. Yay! Claire's tips in the comments of this post were really helpful. I now cut my basil my herbs instead of breaking them off and I water the tomato plants at the base. I'm learning, slowly.

Can' Get Enough - The Mindy Project

I am loving the Mindy Project, I know I only wrote about it a few weeks ago (see here), but I felt it warranted a second mention. The Mindy Project is the perfect 'girls TV night' show. It's funny and upbeat. A quirky mix of 'sex & the city' dating stuff with a touch of Grey's Anatomy (well it has doctors in it) and a dash of Friends. LOVE IT.

Though I do still think of Mindy Kaling as Kelly Kapoor. Ahh I miss Kelly being on the office. Have you seen The Mindy Project? Do you love it too?

Fairy lights, garlands and cactus

Monday, November 12, 2012

Saturday night was our not quite Christmas party and our parties sure have changed since the little miss was born. We had an early start time, a baby area (!) where Lulu and her three friends played and everyone had gone home by midnight (even the ones without kids) & to tell you the truth, I was ready for bed by then too...

We may have bit off a bit more than we could chew with the BBQ. I was exhausted by the end of the evening. What with preparing the house, making salads, getting drinks, feeding Lulu, dinner, giving her a bath, getting her to bed, finishing off the salads, serving food, clean up, it all was a bit much. Nick helped of course and so did some of our friends, but there wasn't that time just to kick back.

Have your parties changed since having kids? It might get a little easier once the babies are bigger & don't need us so much to help them play. However next year we should just host an after 8 cocktail party like last year. Then everyone can get a babysitter & relax.

Here's to a better work out week this week.

We're gearing up for our 'not quite Christmas Party' tonight. It's not quite Christmas because early November is too early for a Christmas party but by late November/early December everyone is having their work Christmas parties or they've already left town for Christmas. This year we thought we'd have it nice and early so everyone can come.  Plus Santa is on his way to the Magic Cave today in Adelaide & that was always the signal to me that it was Christmas time when I was a kid (who's kidding, it's still the yardstick for me now). Do you have something that signals it's Christmas time for you?

The only link I'll leave you with this week is the call to arms from Marieke Hardy on the afternoon of Obama's re-election to 'open a can of electoral woopass on this guy....' Come on Australia, let's all agree not to elect that guy. For all our sake.

Frockin' up - Party, Party, Party

Friday, November 9, 2012

Last Saturday Nick, Lulu & I attended a first birthday party. Lulu had so much fun playing on the birthday girl's play equipment, eating jatz biscuits for the first time & eating cake for the first time (couldn't put the jatz down for a photo). The party was lots of fun. A great chance for my friend to celebrate making it through the first year of motherhood. As promised in last Monday's weekend adventures post, here is what Lulu and I wore:

I feel like Zena today. This morning I have:
  • played with Lulu (refer to family playtime photo above)
  • exercised
  • fed Lulu breakfast
  • read Lulu a story
  • put Lulu down for her nap
  • put away the dishes
  • cleaned up the spare room
  • killed the flies that were hanging out by our back door - ick
  • fixed the creapy crawly
  • jumped in the pool for a bit as a part of the creapy crawly fell off while I was fixing it
  • cleaned the shower
  • cleaned the bath
  • cleaned the sink
  • showered
  • got dressed
  • put make-up on
  • opened the mail
  • checked email, instagram, facebook
  • written this blog post
And now it's 9:45am, Lulu is stirring from her nap & we'll be off to mother's group soon. Here's to a productive afternoon.

Renovations - The Lounge

Wednesday, November 7, 2012

I don't know if this counts as renovations or more just putting our stuff into a space & making it our own, but I'm going to show you anyway. They only change to the room we made was to install a new blind. $120 from home hardware and the room has a whole new look. It does show how easy it is to transform a space with things you love and one new thing.

When we moved in we were certain that one of the first things we'd do would be to change the colour of the fireplace, but we're used to it now, and we'll probably wait till next winter to paint it & replace the gas heater. Is there anything at your place that you were certain you'd change but have come to like?

Grey's Anatomy - the end of an era

Tuesday, November 6, 2012

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone App

Grey's Anatomy usually ends with a huge cliffhanger and last season was no different. With a plane crash and a will or wont they survive finale, I eagerly anticipated the next season.

A few weeks ago I had a night to myself, perfect for Grey's watching as Nick always has unnecessary 'I can't believe this is so terrible' type comments that make it too hard to watch with him. I settled in to watch the first episode of the new season and do you know what? I wished that they had finished up at the end of season 8. The last two episodes of season 8 were so good that they would have been the best ending to the series. Tag on a little happily ever after 'what they're doing now' montage and you'll have a great ending to a good series.

Instead you have fractured characters and the series heading away from that slightly sad, but ultimately feel good mentality to a 'good god I can't watch this heartbreak' mentality. I can't watch it anymore. Have you been able to keep watching Grey's? I've decided that series 8 was the end of Grey's Anatomy for me and I'm going to pretend that they are all in happy places living their dreams.

Exercise Stats

Sunday, November 4, 2012

Uploaded from the Photobucket iPhone App

As you've probably guessed, since I haven't posted about exercise for a while, the exercise part of my life has been a little lacking. With being sick, then Nick being sick, then Lulu, there hasn't been much time for exercise. I've managed two or three days a week, and just enough time to do the 30 day shred video, nothing more. I really need to be exercising at least 5 days a week, with active activities on the other two days.

This week just gone I decided to step it up with the 30 day shred & start again with bigger weights. I was using 1 kg weights (you have to begin somewhere). I've now upped it to 2kg weights. Plus in some of the cardio intervals I've added weights. But even with making the conscious decision to exercise more I still only did 3 days this week & only 2 consecutive days. So I'm making a commitment to post an exercise update each Sunday. Hopefully having to tell you about my success or failure will ensure that I exercise a little more. I get spurred on to exercise more when I see others posts about what they're doing and hopefully I can inspire you to get active.

I've also committed to do the Michelle Bridges 12 Week Body Transformation. Come November 19th things are going to get serious. Stay tuned.
